How to get to Bahorok, Langkat?
- Public transportation
From airport, take ALS bus to Binjai Terminal Bus (40.000 Rp/each person), then a bus to Bukit Lawang (20.000 Rp/each person) to Gotong Royong Terminal Bus.
- Private car
We can facilitate you a car fully AC.
- Transportation time
By car, from airport to Bukit Lawang: about 4 hours 30 minutes.
By bus, from airport to Binjai, the trip should last about 2 hours 30 minutes. The last bus from Binjai leaves at 4.30 pm. And from Binjai to Bukit Lawang you need about 2 hours.
- Demonstration Plot of Organic Farming
It is located in village of Timbang Jaya, Bahorok, Langkat. Here, you can help organic farming activities, such as seedlings, planting, making simple compost from leftover garden waste, the rest of cow manure, using natural materials in the garden as trap crop pests and then applying them on plants. Here, we also plant organic rice which is treated with biochar, vegetables, fruits and medicinal plants.
Besides, you might be in charged as a facilitator if there are students come to this demplot to learn about plants and organic farming.
- Education and Awareness
There is ‘Smart Car’ in Medan and ‘Smart House’ in village of Kuta Gajah, Kutambaru, Langkat. Smart Car is a car which used as a mobile library to educate and aware students and villagers about the importance of preserving forest and wildlife especially orangutan and the habitat.
Smart House is a small room which used as a learning centre for children who do not go to school in village of Kuta Gajah. Here, volunteers will teach them how to read, to write and introducing them about the environment and conservation in simple ways so that it is easy for them to understand well.
- Using Your Specific Skills
To be a volunteer with YPOI, you do not need to have any specific skills other than being in general good physical health and enthusiasm to help us with our projects, but if you have any specific skills (social media, website, community development, writing a proposal, etc) that you want us to be aware of, please email us with details.
Accommodations will be a home stay with local family with basic accommodation and food, for authentic taste of the local way of life. Adaptability to field conditions is required and a basic understanding of the local culture is advised. Volunteers must be also prepared to share accommodation, meals, work tools and personal space with other volunteers and local staff.
What must I bring to Sumatra?
- Indonesian Rupiah cash, for your personal expenses (you might want to buy souvenirs, cold drink or some tour packages for your holiday)
- 2 photocopies of your passport to process police checks, which is normal practice for tourist in Indonesia
- A photocopy of the Indonesian visa.

The rate includes:
- Transportation airport to working site and return
- Accommodation at YPOI site
- Meals 3x per day
- Transportation in conjunction with the work
- Other personal expenses (laundry, cold drink, snacks, souvenirs)
- Entrance fee + guide to Gunung Leuser National Park
- Personal tour package
